Performance Coaching:
Helping Great Leaders and Managers to Become Even Better
In a perfect world, athletes, actors, psychiatrists, leaders and managers would not need coaching. Unfortunately, the world isn’t perfect and neither are we. That’s why The Columbia Consulting Group provides experienced business coaches to assist leaders and managers to improve the skills and modify the behaviors that impede the achievement of their individual and organizational goals.
Great talent is scarce and getting more so. As a result, too many organizations tolerate unsatisfactory performance or behaviors from their most talented managers either because they are not able to replace them or believe the manager will change on his own. The fact is: Doing nothing accomplishes nothing.
The Columbia Consulting Group can help you to improve the business performance of your problem leaders and managers.
We know that people – and organizations – don’t change until they recognize and accept that there is a compelling need to do so. We have developed a five-phase business coaching process that helps the coachee recognize the changes needed and to commit to making these changes.
- First, we assess the organization’s and manager’s situation to identify the real issues that are getting in the way of business results. We also determine the extent to which the manager recognizes the need to change. Often we gather employee feedback on the manager’s performance to help them to achieve recognition and urgency of the need
- Then, working closely with the manager and the hiring client, we set specific goals to be achieved and develop an action plan, schedule and evaluation metrics to get us where we need to be.
- Next, we work one-on-one with the coachee to implement the action plan, to celebrate progress, to assess inevitable temporary setbacks and to work on next steps. Typically, our coach will meet with the coachee two to four times a month, in person or by phone. Depending upon the severity of the issues, this phase can take from three to six months. All coaching discussions are kept strictly confidential to ensure that both parties are focused solely on the interests of the coachee.
- We then work with the coachee to evaluate the results achieved and create a new plan to ensure continued growth. The manager is required to share this evaluation report with his manager and colleagues.
- Finally, we provide follow-on support by phone and email to ensure that the coachee has a trusted colleague to discuss progress and new challenges.
