Dealing With Employee Anxiety in Uncertain Times
The global economic crisis and its effects on agency performance and staffing levels have your people worried about job security. Agency leaders must recognize these concerns. As always, the key is to communicate.
- Take time to interpret events for your employees. Be clear about what the agency is doing, why, and what it means for them. Let people know how they will be kept informed about what’s going on. Uncertainty breeds anxiety; knowledge calms it.
- Acknowledge the emotional maelstrom. Let people know that emotional reactions to any changes in the agency are normal and that they will not be considered less valuable because of them.
- Stay connected, be visible and communicate constantly.
- Do not work behind closed doors.
- Deal with your own anxieties so that they don’t infect others.
